Do Not Despise Small Beginnings (Zechariah 4:10)

Reading: Zechariah 4:10 (ESV)

Whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice…

Reflection

God’s story advances through “small things”: a seed, a boy’s lunch, a widow’s oil. Kingdom math multiplies what looks insignificant. We often postpone obedience until things feel big enough. With more followers, more time, more certainty. But Scripture celebrates beginnings and brick-by-brick faithfulness. The Spirit rejoices when foundations are laid, not only when rooftops gleam. Your hidden consistency prayer before work, generosity no one sees, a conversation with a neighbour carries eternal weight. Don’t wait for perfect. Start with the present.

Apply

  • Name one “small” assignment this week and do it unto the Lord.
  • Share a brief encouragement with someone who’s starting small.
  • Record one grace each night — evidence that God is at work in little things.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, breathe on my small beginnings. Keep me faithful in little, joyful in ordinary, and attentive to Your quiet miracles. Amen.
